Cocker Spaniel Agility Training for Beginners

Being the owner of a Cocker Spaniel, you may have been considering joining an agility training class. If so, you are in for a real treat. Dogs love agility training classes because it gives them a new environment and obstacles to experience. They are introduced to ramps, poles, jumps, and colorful things that challenge their thinking and athletic ability.

Requirements

Most training groups will require your dog to attend an obedience class to learn basic commands. Groups do not tolerate any signs of aggression as this only disrupts the class and could lead to dogs or people being injured.

Performance

Your dog’s performance will depend on his temperament and how well he listens to you. It’s more about the dog than the breed of the dog. However, Cocker Spaniels have proven to be good candidates. They are intelligent and eager to please. Your obedience class trainer will be able to give you more information on how well your dog will respond. You may also want to contact a local agility group to have your Cocker Spaniel tested as well. Request a one-on-one consultation. They will be able to provide you with valuable information and expectations of the training involved. Ask if you can sit in on a lesson so you can see the class in action. You will find that they are accommodating. Some classes are more competitive than others, so it’s a good idea to find a group that your dog is a good fit for.

Training

Training begins with simple warm-ups to familiarize the dog with its surroundings and begins when the handler has your dog’s attention. It is the handler who will first show his dog what to do. In some classes, the owner of the dog will follow the example of the trainer and will also be given guidance. At first the obstacles will be simple and progress to more advanced training as the pup progresses. Lessons generally last about an hour per week and can last up to six to eight weeks. Training continues at home, so he must be willing to put in the time required.

How to find the agility class

It should be pretty easy to find a group to work with. Your veterinarian will be a good source of reference. Vet staff members often also know where to go for agility training. Attend an agility competition and mingle with the handlers and dog owners. You will learn a lot from them as most are willing to help.

Dog agility training is great fun for the owner and the Cocker Spaniel. Classes will provide information on the full scope of training and competition. Good agility training is fun and never forced. Participating in sports is great fun for your puppy and a great way to further develop your puppy’s bond with your Cocker Spaniel.

No matter what your goals are, going through an agility class just once will make your dog a better citizen.
