Does owning a gun increase the security of your home?

In Texas, owning a gun is a source of pride for many people. This right, many Texans will point out, was guaranteed by our forefathers in the Second Amendment to the United States Constitution: “A well-regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to own and carry weapons, will not be infringed.” Some people see this as one of the most important rights established by the founding fathers, since it theoretically allows the people to take up arms against an unjust government, protecting themselves from tyranny, just as the patriots did during the Revolutionary War.

But for all but a few on the radical fringe, the concept of a radical overthrow of the United States government is anything but an abstract notion depicted in doomsday movies. Your interests in gun ownership have more to do with protecting yourself and, of course, your family. It is more a matter of issues like personal security and home security. But before you start sleeping with that gun under your pillow, you should take a minute to consider whether owning a gun really makes people safer in Texas and across the country.

First of all, if you want to keep a gun in your house, you should keep it separate from the bullets, with both items locked away so they can’t be accessed casually. If you have a child at home, the last thing you want to happen is to get their little hands on that gun and do something quick and fatal by accident or lack of understanding of a weapon’s power. . This is the main reason why you would want to keep the bullets locked and separated. But, in the theoretical scenario of a home invasion, or any other situation where the security of your home is threatened, having this type of setup will likely render the gun useless. The only thing that can be said is that if you kept the gun in the bedroom without the bullets, it could be used as a threat to the burglar or intruder. But he would have no power to back up that threat.

Another factor to consider is whether or not you really know how to use the gun and whether or not you can remain calm in an emergency situation. Some people are skilled experts, but most gun owners have only been to a shooting range a few times. In fact, it’s quite common in situations like these for robbery victims to have their guns pointed at them. They get distracted, make a wrong move, or some kind of struggle ensues, and the offender can grab the gun.

This is why, for most people, it makes more sense to stick to measures like installing a home alarm system to bolster the security of your home. In all but the rarest of cases, that should be enough to make sure you and your family stay safe.
