Order your bathroom in 8 easy steps

The most hated room in our homes to clean or clutter up is the bathroom. Once you have some ideas of what you need to do and a plan, it really isn’t that difficult to do and it shouldn’t take that long either. In most homes, the mere mention of cleaning the bathroom is considered the most dreaded task in any home.

If you have promised or challenged yourself to tidy up your home, the bathroom should also be done. So get down to work, get it done first, do that task, and mark it off your list as “completed.”

Now, the 8 easy steps to tidying up your bathroom:

1. Clean the medicine cabinet of all medications. Check expiration dates and properly dispose of those that are old and past their expiration date. Check with your local pharmacy or hospital in your area to see if they have a program in place to accept expired medications for disposal. Health officials have warned that flushing medications is not the correct way to dispose of them. Also be sure to remove the labels from the bottles that have names, addresses and personal information and destroy them. If you have children in the house, make sure the medicines you are storing have child-resistant caps.

2. Take out any other items from your medicine cabinet. You will be amazed at what you will find there. Sort and decide what to keep and what to dispose of. If it’s an over-the-counter medicine or ointment, check for proper disposal. Take precautions for over-the-counter medications if you have children in the home.

3. Under the sink, take everything out and start sorting. If you have duplicates of some things, like shampoo, conditioner, hand lotions, and liquid soap, combine them in a bottle or container and discard the empty containers. Small plastic containers or boxes are a great way to contain these items in one place.

4. First aid supplies. Check and make sure you have all the supplies found in a basic first aid kit; antiseptic, gauze, scissors, tape, Ace bandage, instant cold pack, latex gloves, plasters, tweezers, and sting and bite treatments. If your first aid kit is missing any of these items, be sure to replace them. Store them all together in a container or buy a first aid kit with the necessary items already supplied.

5. Makeup and cosmetics. It is a good idea to check your makeup and cosmetic supplies at least every 6 months and discard what you have not used in that period of time. Especially the mascara needs to be replaced every few months to prevent eye infections.

6. Perfumes and colognes. They have a 3-5 year shelf life if stored properly and should be thrown away if you notice a different odor. Although perfumes and colognes do not “go bad” as they age, the scent and color change.

7. Bed linen and towels. Check all your sheets and pillowcases, bath towels, hand towels, and wash cloths. Combine all of your sheets and pillowcases and get rid of the mismatched ones. Do the same with your towels and washcloths. You may not have matches or sets of these, but check and check for wear and holes and throw them away. If any of the items are still in good condition, donate them to a shelter or thrift store.

8. Hair accessories. If you haven’t been able to resist buying every new hair bow, clips, bows, bands, or even hair dryers or curling irons, then you need to take control of the situation. Decide which of the items you use the most and which you have never used or will probably never use and throw them away. Again, if they are usable and in good condition, donate them.
