Growing a cocaine plant in the rainforest in South America poses some unique legal, social and environmental problems for authorities in Peru and Bolivia. It is illegal to grow and harvest coca on any of their territory, so these two countries must work closely with the Peruvian government to carefully monitor the cultivation, harvesting and sale of this highly addictive illegal drug. Many governments are now working together in the Global Plan to combat cocaine use.

The problem arises from the simple fact that cocaine is a very expensive crop. It costs so much more to produce than most other crops grown commercially. It also takes many more years to mature enough cocaine to be used for production. This has created a huge demand for the drug, but a limited supply. It is estimated that the cocaine plant grows hundreds of tons of coca each year in several countries.

In the 1990’s Bolivia began allowing direct sales from abroad of cocaine. This caused a dramatic increase in shipments from Peru and prompted many Peru citizens to grow their own cocaine in anticipation of future profits. Unfortunately, the effort to cultivate the plant resulted in thousands of tons of cocaine being planted on private and communal properties without sufficient consultation from government officials. This often led to conflict between local users and growers.

Although the cultivation of the cocaine plant has led to the deaths of thousands of people, it has also resulted in hundreds of drug related crimes being solved in many countries. Authorities have been able to arrest many criminals involved in the cocaine trade. This decrease in criminal activity has greatly helped in the fight against drugs. Less organized crime means a smaller amount of cocaine that ends up on the streets, increasing the difficulty for police in tracking users and distributing cocaine. It is believed that the reduction in violence relating to cocaine use has contributed to this trend as well.

In order to control the cocaine production, it has been required by law in many countries that all cocaine plants are monitored and sold only through pharmacies. Any plants found to be growing more than 5% of cocaine were immediately seized and destroyed. Today, it is very difficult to locate a cocaine grower. The majority of growers are either in prison or in hiding themselves out from the law enforcement agencies that regularly search for trafficked plants.

If you are interested in growing your own cocaine, there are several requirements that must be met before planting. Most requirements revolve around location and soil quality. The climate and soil type of the area must be suitable for the plants to grow properly. The location must also be chosen with care, as it is often in the surrounding environment that can affect the growth of the plant. While the plant can survive in some regions, it is not always a good idea as it may be subject to flooding or erosion.
