A Beginner’s Guide to Copywriting for SEO

When Google released the Panda updates, the face of SEO changed completely. This update de-emphasized having as many keywords as possible on your site, to make websites easier to use and read. This was to increase the quality of sites on page one of Google so that users can see the information that is most relevant to their search terms.

natural content

The Google update was done to ensure that quality websites ranked higher for their keywords and search terms than sites that relied on numerous backlinks to give their site authority. The drive for quality has changed the way SEO is carried out and has seen an increase in demand for qualified content writers.

Content should now be written solely with the user in mind instead of being detected by a Google spider. Information must be spelled correctly and include perfect grammar. Google’s previous algorithm allowed poor grammar and inappropriate content to rank high on its search pages, as it checked the boxes in terms of keywords and readability by spiders. However, the emphasis is now on people instead of machines and for a page to have any real value, it must be built for human users.

The emphasis on human users means that the practice of hiding keywords in the background of your website is even more frowned upon. This is because this way of adding keywords to your site is clearly not for humans, as they won’t be able to see them.

Keywords

Keywords are an important part of SEO since they establish the terms that you want to appear in Google and that refer to your business. Keywords should appear naturally in your text and content in relation to your business. However, in the past, this has led poor copywriters to insert keywords into the content where they don’t naturally fit, making the text difficult for humans to read or even meaningless. Another common technique used by poor copywriters is known as “keyword stuffing.” This is where articles or content are created and filled with keywords in an unnatural way; Phrases like “This web design company is an expert in web design and leads the web design market.” Not only does this sentence not make much sense to a human being, but the fact that it is packed with keywords means that it will actually cause the page to lose rank with Google. Approximately 5% of the content should be relevant keywords that follow the natural flow of the content.

Length

The average Internet user will not be prepared to read long articles or content, as the Internet is considered to be a fast source of information. However, the content you create must be long enough to be credited by Google’s search bots. Therefore, the optimal length of an article is between 400 and 1000 words; less and Google will not consider it as quality content, more and it will not be read by users.
