Adopt a wonderful little best friend

I had lost my precious little Falcore, a teacup poodle, about 7 years ago and it took me until a year ago to get over her passing. I really loved that little dog and missed him so much. But the time came to share my love with another puppy and I started looking for the right one. She had wanted for a long time if she would ever have another small dog, a silky little Yorkie. I knew I didn’t want a little one from a pet store because of the treatment they and the parents were receiving. So I decided to find a Dog Mill Rescue.

I searched for about 5 months and decided I would give up a fluffy little Yorkie for adoption. I started researching and found that there were all kinds of rescue groups and they even specialized in certain breeds. I went to the North Shore Animal League America website and applied for a girl. I received a phone call from a lady in Trinidad Colorado, Conni, telling me that she had a baby girl and her name is Katie, she is 2 years old and weighs about 4 pounds. He sent me photos of her and I immediately fell in love with her. We would have to wait about 2 weeks to get her, because she was going to be sterilized. I asked her what her circumstances were and what needs she had. She told me that they had taken 2 little ones from her before they were 2 years old and that she was only alive to breed, she had 2 cesarean sections of the two litters and they were going to remove it because cesarean sections cost too much. There were no other needs except a lot of love. She also told me that she would have to make a house call to make sure the dog had a good life with the receiving family. I agreed and the following weekend we had a visitor. I was very impressed with the way they do adoptions. My husband and I were given the go-ahead to adopt little Katie. Boy am I glad she’s fixed, she’s so little and cute!

We went to pick up Katie on a Saturday, we had to drive 200 miles to get to her, and my husband and I were so excited! We got to her place to meet her and when we walked in all I could see was this adorable little face peeking out of a pack of pets. They handed her over to me and she came right over to shake me and wonder what was going on. My husband melted, his face showed so much love for that girl. We then went and got some food, chew and water for her and headed home.

On the way home we had brought him a towel to lay on the middle console, he lay for about an hour on my lap and then wanted to look around. She was so happy and not shaking now and she was starting to enjoy the ride home, she finally fell asleep at the console. We got home and brought her into the house, put her down so she could check out the place and see where she could go herself. She checked every part of that house, and then she came to me while I was sitting in a chair and wanted me to hug. I picked her up and she sighed and lay down next to me.

Since then he has been a true member of the family. She has her bed on top of our pillows, she has a robe to wear at night, she has a coat mommy made especially for her with all the pretty patterns, she goes shopping with us at the local grocery store, Wal-Mart, and so on. he even visits with family. She is never alone and she is loved so deeply.

Now it tells me when I should be in the office and work in the morning. She stays at the door until I come in and then she goes to her chair with her favorite blanket and lies down while I work. At night, after dinner and our ice cream dessert, she comes over to the chair I’m sitting in and she acts like she wants to be picked up. I go to find her and she runs into the bedroom, which is her way of saying it’s time to go to bed. On her daily walk, Dad usually takes her and she goes a different way than Mom and sometimes it confuses her, but she is glad to go for a walk.

It’s a big bell and it lets me know when even a mouse crosses the yard! We are working on what she needs to bark, neighbors and neighbors’ pets don’t need to bark. She’s a little scared of other people and of dogs, but she’ll get over it soon.

I am so glad to have little Katie, she shows so much love and affection; she is so dedicated to my husband and me. I made the right decision and I will always be grateful for the rescue groups that save little girls and boys from this terrible life. We can show them a lot of love and attention and show them a good and normal life, they respond very well. So think about adopting a Dog Mill Rescue when you’re ready for that new addition to the family.
