Black and Tan Coonhound Dog

Description: This dog is a determined hunting hound. This is a big dog; the head is in good proportion to the body. The body length is equal to or slightly greater than the height of this dog at the withers. The head is longer and more oval in outline, the muzzle is long. The teeth meet in a scissors bite. The eyes are oval and hazel or dark brown; they have tan spots above the eye. This breed has long ears, set low, hanging down to the ground, reaching past the tip of the nose. They have long legs that are straight and even with the body. The dog’s fur fits loosely. The strong tail is carried without reservation. They have short thick black fur with distinctive tan markings on the extremities of the chest and muzzle.

History: This breed was developed by crossing the Talbot’s Hound with the Bloodhound and the Foxhound. The black and tan coonhound was the first coonhound, which was considered a separate breed from the foxhound. This hound is known for its howling and tracking abilities. The hunting skills of this breed are recognized, they have been known to hunt deer, bears, cougars, in all terrains. This is a hardy hound that can live outside in any climate. His talents include tracking, guard dog, and even agility.

Temperament: he is a good-natured, loyal dog, quick to learn and intelligent. This is an eager dog, who loves and is passionate about working. He is gentle and kind to people, he loves to hear the voice of his master. This breed needs to know that humans are alpha and to be shown good leadership in order to maintain this dog’s health and balance. This dog is usually better with older children. This breed needs a lot of exercise, it is used to being able to run for hours. Without a lot of walking, this dog can become very nervous, possibly showing signs of aggression toward the owner, who hasn’t communicated that humans are in charge.

With the right training, leadership, and rules, this dog can be a wonderful dog and a full-fledged member of an active family. Without good physical and mental exercise, this dog can howl if left alone, and can be very aggressive towards other dogs, and will need good socialization at a very young age.
