Amityville Horror – Movie and True Story

The Amityville Horror. Have you heard of it as a movie or maybe a true story. You may have even heard it mentioned in a Eminem song. However, the first time she heard about it, she heard the real truth. Amityville is a real city in New York, Suffolk County to be precise. The town was established in the 1600s, but it wouldn’t be until the 1970s that it would rise to national prominence due to a tragic royal crime committed at the famous address. 112 Ocean Avenue.

On the night of November 1974, Ronald DeFeo Jr. killed 6 members of his own family in what would become known as the Amityville murders. That’s the real Amityville horror, but the story continues after that. George Lutz and his wife (along with their three children) moved into that house on Ocean Ave the following December. Kathy Lutz found the place creepy right away and 28 days later (interesting?) the family moved out of that residence claiming they had experienced traumatic paranormal events.

Now, enter the author jay anson. He wrote not only the book 666but also the novel titled ‘The Amityville Horror‘based on the events the Lutz family went through, though how closely it stuck to the original true story is up for debate. This book (published in 1977), in turn, was used as the basis for a film of the same title in 1979. The film terrified audiences around the world with its james brolin, margot kidder and Rod Steiger all giving spooky performances that only added to the already terrifying Amityville house horror story.

Does the Amityville house exist today in real life? It certainly does, although it has been renovated these days and the management has changed. Many people came to see the site of the DeFeo murders and the place where the demonic possession was supposed to have taken place. Obviously, the homeowners he needed his privacy so they took steps to get it back.

I hope I have helped clear up any misunderstandings about the terrible events surrounding the Amityville house. While the movies are great (a new version was made in 2005), the true stories are not to smile.
