How To Keep Your Dogs Skin And Coat Healthy With Good Pet Grooming

Did you know that up to 30% of the daily protein requirement in dogs and cats can be used to replenish dead skin and hair? Obviously, protein plays an important role in maintaining the integrity of your pets skin and coat. Deficiencies can arise from rations that are low in protein or contain poor sources of protein. Diseases such as parasitism or malnutrition can also rob the body of necessary proteins.

Signs of protein deficiency can include a dry, harsh, thin coat, with or without bald patches, scaly skin, and abnormal shedding cycles.

Adult dogs need about 20 percent of their daily energy in the form of protein. Puppies and kittens need even more. Most commercial dog and cat foods are designed to meet these requirements. However, not all are created equal, you should choose a ration that contains protein from multiple food sources to ensure your pet receives a well-balanced meal.

Beware of high protein food labels though, in fact most researchers believe that such a diet fed to your pet long term could severely affect kidney function.

Always consult your vet before putting your pet on any new diet. Vitamins and minerals are necessary for healthy skin and hair. However, they should never be used indiscriminately to treat skin conditions or disorders. Giving your pet large amounts of a particular vitamin or mineral could lead to other deficiencies.

When it comes to how our bodies work, we’re not much different than our furry friends. The rules that apply to our own good nutrition generally work for our pets as well. Always make sure your dog or cat gets regular checkups to make sure he’s eating the right diet and getting the right amount of nutrition. Remember that good pet grooming and well-nourished clothing will keep your best friend healthy and happy.
