Myths about domestic violence

Domestic violence is the physical, emotional, or sexual abuse of another person by a person in a romantic relationship, with the intent to control that person. There are several facts about the battery and there are several myths about it that are worth addressing.

Only women are abusers

Although about 95% of abused people are women, about 5% of them are men. Usually men don’t talk about it, but sometimes you’ll hear women talk about “smacking him over the head” in reference to what was done to him. Domestic violence against men does happen.

Alcohol and drugs are to blame

Often this crime can take place after the abuser has used alcohol and drugs, but these things are just the scapegoat. The abuser’s intention is to control the victim and will use all possible methods to achieve her goal, without being blamed.

it’s the victim’s fault

There is a lot of confusion among some as to whether or not the victim should be blamed, but it is never the victim’s fault.

Some believe that because the victim initially fights back, or stays in the relationship, that they are looking for you, but this is not true. With this logic, it is the same as saying that because someone breaks into your house by force and you do not move from the neighborhood, you are looking for a new attack on your house.

This violence has to do with the person who inflicts the pain and not with the one who is being harmed. The victim should never be blamed.

Only poor women are mistreated

The idea that only poor women are abused is not real. Battering women come from the economically rich, middle and poor class. Although you will find that women at a certain income level are hurt more than others, keep in mind that the goal is to control that woman.
