Bokashi Composting Instructions

Bokashi composting equipment

You only need a single Bokashi container to get started with Bokashi Composting; however, I highly recommend using a couple of containers if you can. By having two buckets, while 1 is full and fermenting, you can use the second one to start the process all over again using your new kitchen scraps. After you have all the Bokashi containers ready, the only additional items you will need are the Bokashi bran and some food scraps.

Bokashi composting method

Start by simply sprinkling some Bokashi bran in the bottom of the Bokashi container. A little hand is usually enough.

Put a layer of food waste in the container. Break up the important elements you are going to include, as this will speed up the process. The size of a golf ball or smaller is advantageous. It’s okay to add animal products, fish, dairy products, cooked or raw; however, try not to add products with too much moisture, for example, milk or juice.

Sprinkle one more handful of Bokashi bran on top of leftover food.

Crush leftovers using a flat plate, masher, or something similar. With this method, you’re trying to remove a lot of the trapped air and roughly level the top of the food scraps.

Put the lid on the Bokashi bucket. The lid must be truly sealed, minimizing the amount of air that comes into contact with kitchen waste.

Proceed to add more kitchen scraps along with the Bokashi bran in stages. Continue until the Bokashi container is completely full.

Every 2-3 days, drain any kind of excess juice from the Bokashi container. Do this while continuously loading the container in layers, as well as when it is full. Most buckets have a faucet to do this. For maximum performance, the collected Bokashi juice should really be applied within 1 day.

When it is full, leave the Bokashi pot with the lid tightly closed for two weeks. The Bokashi juice must continue to be drained during this period of time.

After two weeks, the Bokashi compost will be ready for use.

That is all that is needed. Just pay attention to these simple steps and soon you will be recycling 100% of your kitchen waste. There really is no easier way to get started with kitchen composting than by using the Bokashi composting process.
